The Osprey ‘Essential Histories’ series is designed to be read as a quick all-round introduction to the great military campaigns of history. Each title includes an even-handed look at the politics which led to conflict, the major personalities involved, the opposing armies, an outline of the fighting, step by step, case studies of the lives of a soldier and civilian caught up in the conflict, and a look at the long-term repercussions of the war. And so it is with this one; in 96 pages Ian Knight tells you everything you need to know about the Anglo-Zulu War before you start reading some of the more exhaustive studies out there. All of this is, moreover, fully illustrated and mapped in the distinctive Osprey style.

With its even-handed approach to the war as a whole, and to both sides, even well-read students of the war will find this a refreshing resume, and for anyone confused by the sheer volume of books out there – or indeed about to embark on a battlefield tour – it is an ideal place to start. As usual, Ian has even managed to find a few previously unpublished images to keep it visually interesting. Recommended.
