What a wonderful book and a true labour of love! The book deals with the making of that remarkable film ZULU which set so many enthusiasts on the trail to discover more about this intriguing campaign. Make no mistake, the book is not a history book about the Zulu War – it does what it sets out to do and describes the films’ complete history, from the initial idea to the first public showing. I found each and every page full of interesting facts and material; it deals with the construction of the battle scene, the recruitment of Zulus who had never even seen a camera team at work, filming under the constriction of apartheid and life with all the famous actors. It contains first hand accounts of shooting the film, extracts from letters and production documents, biographies of the actors and the original magazine article on Rorke’s Drift. Bear in mind these were written many years ago. This is certainly the Zulu War book to buy for Christmas, especially if you want to get an insight into the making of the film. Well done author Sheldon Hall !
